What is Psychotherapeutic Counselling?

All of us feel worried or depressed now and again and most of us have known times when we say “I just can’t cope any more” or “I don’t know which way to turn”. It is at these difficult, painful times that it can be helpful to talk things over in confidence with an understanding objective outsider. TACT is able to provide Psychotherapeutic Counselling for adults, children families and couples.

TACT Psychotherapeutic Counsellors are trained to listen attentively while you talk through your problems and to support you through your bad patch. They help you find your own answers to your troubles by encouraging you to see the bigger picture. They are there to offer you guidance, concentrated time and impartial view that friends can’t give.

Many people seek help from TACT Psychotherapeutic Counsellors at times in their lives. Clients may be grieving over the death of a loved one, or not getting on with their partner, they may have lost their job or worrying about coping with a new one or may be worried about being bullied at school or work. The strain of work or exams may be too much, anxiety about the kids or their parents, or simply be depressed for no obvious reason.

TACT Counselling is based on talking and the trusting relationship that builds up between the client and the counsellor The aim is to help you develop insight into your problems, by helping you draw from your own resources, resources you often aren’t aware you had, and so enable you to approach your life in a fresh way.

Counselling at TACT is confidential. You and the Counsellor will discuss confidentiality in your first session and discuss the limitations of this. TACT counsellors do not make telephone calls or engage in discussions with your GP, employer, partner, family members, friends or agencies to find out or clarify or add to your personal information without your knowledge. Sometimes, in the public interest, TACT counsellors may need to make a referral to an agency when there is as serious risk of imminent harm to their clients or others and these referrals are usually , though not always, made with the clients knowledge and consent. TACT Psychotherapeutic Counsellors work within the ethical codes of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), United Kingdom Counsel for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the European interdisciplinary Association for Counselling with Children and Young People (EIATCYP). Most of all, the counselling process can help you to feel more in control of your life and able to do something yourself about what isn’t right for you, about the feelings distressing you or about a difficult relationship, rather than feeling helpless, angry or frustrated. You don’t have to be a passenger in your life.
